Board of Deacons...

“The office of Deacon, as set forth in Scripture, is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ.  Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office.”

- Book of Order, G-6.0401

The Deacons serve the church in a number of different ministries, each one important to our members in different ways.

Nursing Home/Homebound Visitation participates in monthly visits to members who reside in local nursing homes or long-term care facilities, or who are confined to their homes.

Care and Concern is a ministry to members just home from the hospital – a phone call, a visit, a meal – letting members know we care, as well as giving support to members who are mourning the loss of a family member.

Communion: the Deacons prepare and set up the elements for services that include Communion.  Every Deacon is assigned to a team, and each team is responsible for about three (3) Communions per year.

Kitchen Cupboard: Donations of food and money are brought to the church by members of the congregation each week.  The Deacons are responsible for counting items, recording the total donations, and delivering the items to the Salvation Army.  Any monetary donations are counted and taken to the church accountant for payment to the Kitchen Cupboard.

Flowers: Deacons deliver small poinsettias to shut-ins at Christmas and deliver flowers from the sanctuary on Sundays (when requested).

Scholarship applications are accepted each year for scholarship funds that the Deacons have available through memorial funds.  The Scholarship Chair reviews applications and makes recommendations, and the Board, as a whole, makes decisions on the distribution.

Outreach supports various community projects as recommended by the Outreach Chair; the Board, as a whole, makes decisions on projects.

The Church Nominating Committee has a representative from the Board of Deacons, who will take suggestions to the committee for possible candidates for Deacons, Elders, and additional members of the Nominating Committee.

Baby Ministry: when a child is born in our church family, Deacons place a rose on the Communion table the following Sunday.  The rose and a book are delivered to the family.

Joint Meeting with Session: Once a year Session and Deacons meet together, and the Deacons give a brief report on the work being carried out.  This is required by the Book of Order.

Leading Sunday Worship: Deacons lead worship one Sunday per year.  All Deacons take part.

Lenten Service: During Lent, Deacons lead a mid-week service.

Deacon of the Month: Each month, a “Deacon of the Month” will be assigned to open meetings with devotions and close meetings with a prayer, as well as write a summary of the meeting for the church newsletter (Good News).
