Our Local Mission Commitment...

At First Presbyterian Church, we believe an important part of the Christian life is in supporting various mission projects, both at home and abroad.  Some local projects we support include:

  • Durfee Tutoring Project - this community support for learning matches volunteers with children who need help in their school work.  Although now governed by its own board, the project was overseen by the church in its earlier days.
  • Campus Ministries - First Presbyterian supports both the Protestant Cooperative Ministry at Cornell University and the Ithaca College Protestant Community.
  • IACC Day Care - a local day care organization, IACC has its main offices and three classrooms housed withing First Presbyterian's building.
  • English as a Second Language - ESL classes from the Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga Board Of Cooperative Education Services (TST BOCES) hold their classes in our Sunday School classrooms during the week.
  • Ithaca Kitchen Cupboard - this food cupboard, housed in the Ithaca Corps of the Salvation Army, is supported in part by donations of food, money, and volunteer time from First Presbyterian Church.
  • Friendship Center - now under the able leadership of the Tompkins County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Friendship Center is a drop-in service center for the homeless and underserved of our community, and was started by members of First Presbyterian.
  • Youth Group Projects - the church is proud to support the youth groups in their various mission efforts.
  • JPIC - one of the church's most active committees.  JPIC ("jay-pick") is short for "Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation."
