John the Baptist Mary Magdalene St. John Christ St. Peter Mary St. Paul

St. Peter the fisherman

The lower panel reads: Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God. (Revelation 3:12a)

This window was given in memory of George Russell Williams by his wife.  He lived from 1844 to 1907.  he was a member of this church for 50 years and acted as teacher, trustee, elder, and superintendent.  He was a trustee of Cornell and president of the First National Bank.  His home was 2 Fountain Place, now the home of the president of Ithaca College.

The Williams family were very prominent locally.  There is a portrait of Josiah Williams, the founder, in Cornell Archives.  He came from Connecticut in 1825 and, in connection with the opening of the Erie Canal, started a prosperous boat building concern.  He was a charter trustee of Cornell.  The original family home was on West Hill at Elm and Hector Streets (just above "the Octopus").  It was still there when I first came to Ithaca, and Miss Augusta and Miss Charlotte Williams were living there until the early 1930s.  Miss Augusta Williams gave the simple and very beautiful windows in the main body of the church - all of them!  They were completed by 1901.  The design probably came from the office of Cady, Berg, & Lee the architects, possibly designed by J. Cleveland who was responsible for the main design of the church.

The memorial plaque reads:
